WARNING: This goal is not a fine example of Tiki Taka.

There is no careful and meticulous build up to this goal. No passing pattern. I had timed it: it took 9 seconds for the ball to travel from the edge of Van der Sar’s small box to the back of the opponent net. Exactly 100 meters. Usain Bolt covers this distance in 9.5 seconds.

For me it is the most sublime single move of Ryan Giggs’ career. I’ve seen Bergkamp do similar stuff. Over 40 meters, not 100. This was a Ronaldo-like control in taming the long ball. And a Xavi-like pass to find Hernandez in motion. It was better than that famous goal. The technique is as good. The idea is better. And Giggs made it look simple.

No Tiki-Taka.

Tic-Tac-Toe.
