The Carling Cup. Why?

The Carling Cup is not important and it isn't going to become important unless they turn it into an official U-21 club competition

The national Cup in many nations is a dying football institute.  So what about the Carling Cup? It’s so unimportant, it actually is a reserve League Cup.

Money, or the lack of it, tells the story. The owners of Carling beer have opted not to renew their title sponsorship of England’s League Cup. Why? Because “the perception of the competition amongst football fans” as Chris McDonough, Molson Coors’ marketing director in Britain said.

The Carling Cup is not important and it isn’t going to become important unless they turn it into an official U-21 club competition or something like that.

Anyhow, Why can’t European sport be a bit more like American sport and focus just on one competition? Why do clubs need to fight for what is essentially   consolation prize? Why do sponsors and TV stations need to invest in it?
