In the last few years, with Barcelona’s astonishing success, there has been a lot of historical revision . Some of it by the media and some of it by the Catalan club itself. Winners write history and if needed re-write it.
Like the notion that Barcelona “always relied on home grown talent” – which is an absolute fallacy. No club, including Real Madrid, has bought more world class players than Barcelona. The 2006 European Cup winning side started six expensive purchases in the midfield and forward line.
LIke the notion that the club always aspired to Johan Cruyff‘s ideals of attacking possession based football. Well, the truth is that a lot of the time they were fighting over these matters.
Pep Guardiola always paid lip service to this mantras. But the truth is that he revolutionized the club. Modern day Barcelona is 90% him. Ideals that existed maybe in theory he turned into the everyday reality at the club.
