Is Euro 2012 a Commercial Failure?

Euro 2012 will bring a near-daily diet of ratings bigger than the Super Bowl. So how come the NFL is making 10 times more than Uefa?

Euro 2012 - The Trophy and the ball

The European Championship begins today.

UEFA will earn commercial revenues of at least $1.6 billion for the 16-team tournament in Poland and Ukraine. Uefa made a point that each match slot expected to draw an average television audience of 150 million fans worldwide. So basically Euro 2012 will bring a near-daily diet of ratings bigger than the Super Bowl.

“You can see it is mega,” said David Taylor, chief executive of UEFA Events, which has contracts with 203 broadcasters. “Certainly, when we are talking to sponsors and others, they are interested in the wider global impact.”

At this point I would like to mention that the NFL’s income is more than $10 billion and American Football is not even half as popular all over the world as  football.

So could it be that Uefa and its Euros are not that commercially successful?
