According to Marca Cristiano Ronaldo is making €10m net per season. According to Marca’s list that’s a lot less than Zlatan Ibrahimović, Samuel Eto’o, Wayne Rooney and even Yaya Toure and Dario Conca.
If you compare his pay check to other super athletes, it might explain why he is so “sad“.
Ronaldo’s salary is about 12.6 million dollars per season.
Real Madrid‘s revenue is $695 million.
Real Madrid have about 25 senior players on its wage budget and about 25 more low-paid players.
Ronaldo is by far the most popular and probably most recognizable athlete in the world: More than 48,226,681 likes on Facebook and 12,928,932 followers on Twitter.
He plays about 6,000 minutes per season. More than any other athlete in the world.
Now let’s compare it to other superstars in different sports.
Kobe Bryant will net $27,849,149 playing for the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers in the 2012/13 season.
Lakers’ revenues is about $210 million.
Lakers have 15 players on their payroll.
Kobe is popular but not in the same sphere as Ronaldo. 14,037,253 Facebook likes and just 120,398 followers on Twitter.
Kobe, on a busy season, is playing about 3,300 minutes.
By the way Miami Heat’s LeBron James will earn $17,545,000 in the 2012/13 season. The almost unknown outside the USA, Joe Johnson, will be making $19,752,645 in the 2012/13 season.
New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez is on $29,000,000 per season. He plays for a team with revenue of $439m.
Yankees have between 25 to 40 players on the payroll.
In Baseball they play a ridiculous number of games per a season – 162, not including playoffs. However, baseball is not as demanding physically as football.
Rodriguez has just 926,236 likes on Facebook.
Peyton Manning from the NFL is on $18,000,000 a season.
His team, Denver Broncos earns between $250m to $300m per season and has about 50 players on its payroll.
Manning has 1,178,286 likes on Facebook. Oh, and he will play a maximum of 1,200 minutes per season.
So the bottom line is that Ronaldo is working harder than all the other superstars mentioned in this post. He is a lot more popular than them and he plays for a team that is richer than all the other superstars’ teams. He should really get a better pay check.
